Does your tween love to read science fiction or fantasy books?
Are they interested in creating their own worlds?
Or, are they just really into the natural environment?
Look no further. World building is a common term for fantasy writers. But it is more than imagining societies and power structures. To understand the land is to understand the way life moves on it.
In this writing workshop students will build worlds out of the study of a single leaf. We will consider the adaptation of leaves in our environment and observe the way fantasy and science fiction writers such as Philip Pullman, Rick Rordon, and Angeline Boulley write about the environment and land. Leaves have adapted to their environments over millennia. Their form tells the story of their history, and their significance to humans and animals.
The tweens in this workshop will formulate their stories beginning with the leaves of their imaginary world. In their formulation of their worlds, they will practice writing clear and concise sentences that delve into the environment that makes up the world of their imagination.
