The Beauty of Math

I used to think I wasn’t good at math, that I didn’t like math because I was embarrassed. I felt like I didn’t know it and I became a cliche. Math was not my thing: an excuse to put in half the effort. 

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned before that I was a solidly mediocre student for most of my education. 

This was because of my own level of confidence and really nothing else. Once I began to build confidence my grades changed drastically. There are so many reasons, personal and social that I protected myself by shutting down in various parts of my life. 

But when I found this the concept of teaching math opened up to me.

Math is life in measurement. I think this concept would have helped my young math brain. 

In addition to cooking, teaching, music, dance and all innumerable practical hands on math lessons, I found this technique helpful for students from kindergarten through high school to help feel they have an ownership of the subject.

Always apply math to the world, to a student’s life, aside from solving problems, math should always be

Skip counting circles with pegs or hole punches. Look at patterns of the Fibonacci sequence, or the way prime numbers appear. Every moment in math is an opportunity to see just beyond the physical world.
